‘Glasgow Climate Package’: the keys to the agreement

The UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) ends in Glasgow (United Kingdom) with an agreement to call on countries around the world to initiate the abandonment of coal, in what is the first global call to leave this fuel behind and manages to keep alive the goal of limiting global warming by the end of century at 1.5 degrees centigrade (ºC).

The ‘Glasgow Climate Package’ has been hanging by a thread until the last minute by the disagreement from India and China in relation to the language and has been downgraded from “phasing out” unspoiled coal to “phasing out”, prompting angry response from the European Union and vulnerable countries.

These are the main keys:

– The approved text calls for an end to inefficient subsidies to fossil fuels as countries reinforce their cuts in carbon emissions greenhouse gases in 2030 at the end of next year to limit warming and achieve the 1.5ºC target.

– Another of the advances to which the countries have committed is to reinforce their emission reduction by 2030 and to present this new commitment at the end of next year when the next summit will be held, which will be COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh (Egypt).

– The agreement urges developed countries to at least double their full funding to help developing countries to adapt to climate change compared to 2019. Likewise, another achievement is that it has been possible to finalize key aspects of the Paris rule book in terms of carbon markets.
