The president of USA, Joe Bidenwill meet on Wednesday with the leaders of the eastern flank of the NATO to show support for their security after Moscow suspended a landmark nuclear arms control treaty.
Biden arrived in Warsaw late on Monday after a surprise visit to kyiv just days before the anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
At the height of tension between Russia and the West in the decades since the Cold War, Biden addressed thousands of people in central Warsaw on Tuesday, saying “autocrats” like Russian President Vladimir Putin must be opposed. .
Hours earlier, Putin delivered a long speech loaded with criticism of Western powers, which he blamed for the war in Ukraine. Putin also backtracked on the New START arms control treaty – a 2010 agreement that limits the number of strategic nuclear warheads deployed by Moscow and Washington – and warned that Moscow could resume nuclear tests.
On Wednesday, Biden will meet with US embassy staff in Warsaw before meeting with the leaders of the “Bucharest Nine”, which includes countries on the eastern flank of NATO such as Poland, Bulgaria and Lithuania, which joined the Western military alliance after being dominated by Moscow during the Cold War.
Most of them are among the staunchest supporters of military aid to Ukraine, and officials from the group’s countries have called for additional resources, such as air defense systems.
At the meeting, Biden is scheduled to reaffirm commitments on his security and discuss support for Ukraine before returning to Washington.
Russia views NATO, which could soon expand to include Sweden and Finland, as an existential threat.
