They call 80 protests in Mexico against the electoral reform of López Obrador

Various civil organizations called this Tuesday more than 80 concentrations in different cities of Mexico and abroad to protest against the electoral reform proposed by the president of the country, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

The demonstrations, in which 118 organizations will participate, will take place next Sunday in 83 different cities, seven of them abroad, the organizers, grouped under the Unid@s association, announced at a press conference.

“Our intention is to send a message in defense of the powers of the nation, democracy and our freedoms”exposed Amado Avendaño, from the National Civic Front organization.

The concentration in Mexico City will be in the central Zócalo square at 11:00 (17:00 GMT), and the former minister of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) José Ramón Cossío and the journalist Beatriz Pagés will intervene.

But they will spread to cities throughout the country, such as Acapulco, Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Culiacán, Guanajuato, Durango, Oaxaca, Tuxtla Gutiérrez or Mérida, and also abroad such as Barcelona, Madrid or Washington DC

“But the march is not enough, we want the declaration of unconstitutionality”, said former Morelos governor and former federal deputy Marco Antonio Adame, of the right-wing National Action Party (PAN).

The electoral reform proposed by López Obrador, known as “Plan B”, that will be voted on this week, has raised controversy for cutting the budget and powers of the National Electoral Institute (INE).

The Government proposed last year a constitutional reform in electoral matters, with a broader scope, but it failed in Congress.

“We are aware of the risk in which our democracy continues in the face of the power’s intention to displace the INE, with the so-called ‘Plan B’ that the pro-government majority intends to approve this week without listening to the citizens or the opposition”Avendaño denounced.

Representatives of the organizing organizations advanced the manifesto that will be read in the mobilizations, in which they denounce that the electoral reform “it would compromise the stability of the country” and? “INE will not be able to carry out its work with professionalism”.

Along these lines, Diego Uribe, representative of the Impacto Legislativo association, stated that the Government has proposed this reform because it has “fear of losing the presidency of the Republic and of democracy”.

“Doubts in the elections and militarization put us at risk of following the path of brother countries in Latin America. What happens if the party that loses the elections in 2024 has the Army on its side? questioned Uribe.

The protest on Sunday will seek to replicate that of November 13, when thousands of INE defenders marched in various cities in the country, a demonstration that was answered days later by another called by López Obrador, which brought together, according to the authorities, about a million people.
