At least 70 migrant people have died as a result of a tragic shipwreck registered off the coast of Libya, as reported on Wednesday by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The ship, which had departed this Tuesday from Qasr Alkayar bound for Europe, it was carrying some 80 people, of whom seven managed to swim to the Libyan coast “in extreme conditions” and are currently hospitalized, the organization has indicated.

In 2022, IOM recorded 1,450 deaths on this route, which from Libya and other Maghreb countries is mainly destined for Italy and Malta.
