Shooting at University of Michigan leaves three dead, five injured

Three dead and five wounded left an armed attack on the University of Michigan campus Monday night. Some of the injured have injuries that could be life-threatening.

Police reported hearing shots at around 8:30 p.m. and moments later confirmed that it was a shootout. The shooter began shooting inside a university building late last night, said Chris Rozman, acting deputy chief of campus police.

“It appears there is only one suspect at this time,” Michigan State University police said.

The gunman then walked to a nearby building where he fired more shots, specifically at IM East, a campus gym about a mile from Berkey Hall.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said she is being briefed on the shooting at the university.

“I have been informed about the shooting at Michigan State University. Michigan State Police along with @msupolice, local police and first responders are on the ground. Let’s embrace the Spartan community tonight. We will keep everyone updated as we learn more,” the governor tweeted.

The suspect fled the scene and the police are looking for him.

Police released a photo of the suspect, a short black man wearing red shoes, a jean jacket and a baseball cap. (YO)
