Spanish Marines have participated in the rescue of a seven-year-old boy alive during this Friday and Saturday morning among the rubble of one of the buildings demolished by the earthquake in Turkey, whose final extraction has been carried out by a Turkish team, according to sources from the Ministry of Defense.
“The situation was a bit chaotic since it was the fifth day after the earthquake and the chances of finding someone alive decreased drastically,” said Marine Infantry Lieutenant Manuel González Baiges, of the 7th Company of the Second Landing Battalion.
The infantry was helping to clean up and remove debris from one of the buildings in the downtown area of Iskenderun when “a sound was heard” that was identified for the Turkish team. “We are the rescue team; if someone hears me, shout or give three knocks around them,” the Turks said.
At that moment, the rescue teams were able to save this child who was in the rubble: “It took them about 20 minutes to reach that little life that returned a thread of hope to all of us who were in the place”, said González Baiges.
The Spanish Navy ships ‘Juan Carlos’ I and ‘Galicia’ left last Monday in the direction of the area affected by the earthquake in Turkey to help in the rescue work of people, in addition to two planes, one from the Military Unit of Emergencies (UME) and another with firefighters from the Community of Madrid. The devastating earthquake in Turkey has left at least 20,665 deadin which the number of injured is 80,088 people, according to the latest official balance of this Saturday.
Andalusian firefighters rescue a minor trapped under the rubble
In addition, Andalusian firefighters have rescued a minor alive who was trapped under the rubble of a building affected by the earthquake that shook Turkey, which has been possible after ten hours of intense work and in collaboration with the Tümad mining company.
The members of the team of the non-governmental organization ‘Firefighters for the World’, which includes several members of the Provincial Consortium of the Malaga Provincial Council along with others from the Huelva Consortium and the Huelva City Council, have managed to save the boy. The firefighters have offer water to the minor at first when he was still buried and, after using machinery to destroy and remove the rubble, they have managed to free him.
This rescue is in addition to others carried out this week in Turkey in places like the Turkish province of Hatay. Three contingents made up of eight members of the Málaga Provincial Fire Department Consortium traveled to Turkey to support the search for survivors after the earthquake that affected the southeast of the country and northern Syria. Malaga firefighters, who have already intervened in tragedies that have occurred in other countries, are provided with rescue dogs and various specialized material.
