Benfica, the factory of millions of Europe

The transfer of Argentine Enzo Fernández broke records in the premier league English, but it was not the biggest sale made by the Benficathe new millionaire talent factory of the soccer European, since that distinction currently falls on one of the jewels from his quarry, João Félix.

In 2019, Atlético de Madrid agreed to pay 127 million euros for the young Portuguese striker.

As for Enzo, he went to Chelsea in the last seconds of January 31 in exchange for 121 million euros, which makes it the highest acquisition in the English League.

Benfica acquired the midfielder from River Plate last July for 10 million euros and now receives an astronomical amount.

In his short stay in Portugal, Enzo exhibited himself in Europe, earned a place in the national team and shone in the victory of the “Albiceleste” in the World Cup in Qatar, where he was even chosen as the best young player in the competition.

River Plate also benefited from the agreement between Benfica and Chelsea, which will receive 24 million euros.

The president of the Buenos Aires club, Jorge Brito, defined it as “a great achievement”.

“We never thought it would be a transfer of 120 million”he recently said in statements quoted by the Argentine newspaper Olé and widely disseminated by the Portuguese press.

The contracting model that Portuguese teams usually use benefits clubs like River, which have the possibility of retaining a higher percentage of their players’ passes and receiving a greater sum of money for a future transfer.

The same happened with Almería, from which Benfica acquired the Uruguayan striker Darwin Núñez in 2020 for 24 million euros.

In his second and last season in Lisbon, the international “charrúa” was lethal and became the “pichichi” of the Portuguese League.

Shortly after, Núñez headed for Anfield Road to defend the colors of Liverpool after 75 million euros plus 25 in variables.

10 million already went to the coffers of the Andalusian entity, which kept 20% of his pass, while the Uruguayan Peñarol received about 3 million for being his training team.

Talent “Made in Seixal”

Despite the bulky number, Enzo Fernández was not the biggest sale in the history of Benfica.

The eldest was Joao Félix, one of the many talents to come out of the “Benfica Campus”the team’s academy and sports center located in Seixal, about 25 kilometers from Lisbon.

Pep Guardiola seems to be a great admirer of this academy, since he has several of his “alumni” at Manchester City: Bernardo Silva, Rúben Dias, João Cancelo or Ederson.

Dias and Ederson went directly from Benfica to City for around 71 and 40 million euros, respectively.

“Discounts” from Benfica

On the other hand, Silva and Cancelo (now on loan to Bayern Munich) were not such successful sales, especially considering the level of these players and the gigantic sums of today.

The first was acquired by Monaco in 2014 for 15 million, the same amount that Valencia paid Benfica for Cancelo a year later.

Compared to the current state of the market, many of the incarnate sales seem “discounted.”

The Argentine Ángel Di María, also a world champion, went to Real Madrid in 2010 for 33 million; the Brazilian David Luiz went to Chelsea that same year for 25; and Atlético de Madrid took over the Slovenian Jan Oblak for 16 in 2014.

Now, the Portuguese club has “shielded” the most promising players in its squad.

His scorer, the Portuguese Gonçalo Ramos, has a clause of 120 million, while whoever wants to take defender António Silva will have to pay 100 million, according to the local press.

They are joined by the latest signings, the Norwegian Andreas Schjelderup and the Danish Casper Tengstedt, both forwards and also with a 100 million clause.
