The alleged mastermind behind the murder of a Paraguayan prosecutor is arrested in Brazil

The Brazilian Federal Police (PF) stopped in the city of Rio de Janeiro to one of the alleged masterminds of the murder of the Paraguayan anti-mafia prosecutor Marcelo Peci in May 2022, the institution reported this Friday.

The arrest of the suspect, a Paraguayan national and identified as Miguel Insfran by the Prosecutor’s Office of that country, occurred on Thursday in the neighborhood of Recreio dos Bandeirantes, a suburb in the western zone of Rio.

Insfran, aka “Uncle Rico” was considered an international fugitive and was wanted by the Paraguayan justice and Interpol by drug trafficking, money laundering and other crimes. It was a “priority target” within the framework of cooperation between the Brazilian and international police, the federal force said in a note.

For the murder of Pecci, last August the Colombian justice prosecuted a Colombian accused of having directed the operation along with four other performers.

Pecci, 45, was murdered on May 10 last year in front of his pregnant wife.the Paraguayan journalist Claudia Aguilera, when they vacationed on the Colombian island of Barú, near the city of Cartagena (north).

Last year, Colombian media and President Gustavo Petro himself had targeted Insfrán and the Uruguayan Sebastián Marset, currently a fugitive, as alleged masterminds of the murder of Peccialthough neither the Colombian nor the Paraguayan courts formalized charges against him.

Specialized in organized crime, drug trafficking, money laundering and terrorist financing, the prosecutor had investigated gangs from Brazil, as well as Lebanese money launderers from the area known as the Triple Frontier, border area between Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina.
