He UN High Commissioner for Human Rights demanded this friday “an immediate ceasefire” in Syria to facilitate providing aid for earthquake victims that devastated part of the country earlier in the week.
Volker Turk “calls for an immediate ceasefire in Syria and full respect for human rights and the obligations of humanitarian law so that help can reach everyone”, indicated the High Commissioner in a tweet.
“In this terrible period in #Turkey and #Syria, we call for the urgent delivery of assistance to ALL who need it,” he insisted in the tweet.
The civil war in Syria, which began in 2011, complicates access for humanitarian aidespecially to the areas in the hands of the rebels, in the northwest of the country.
for now, the bulk of aid to this area comes from Turkey and must go through the Bab al Hawa crossing, the only authorized crossing point, between Syria and Turkey. The damage caused by the earthquake on Turkish roads complicates the supply.
The UN has repeatedly called on the Bashar al-Assad regime to open other crossing points to speed up the rescue and assistance efforts for the millions of people affected by the earthquakes, many of whom were already living in very precarious conditions before the earthquake. (YO)
