The European Union (EU) announced this Friday the sending 250 firefighters, doctors and emergency specialists to Chilewhich will be added to the forest fire fighting tasks that devastate areas in the center south of that country.
According to a note from the European External Action Service (responsible for EU diplomacy)these are experts contributed by Portugal, Spain and France in response to a Chilean request for assistance.

In the statement, the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, noted that “European solidarity knows no limits. We stand with Chile at this time of enormous need and we are proud of the response efforts” to the fires.
For his part, the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarcic, praised the gesture of Portugal, Spain and France to immediately dispose of their humanitarian contributions at a time when attention is turning to the effects of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.
For this reason, he welcomed the fact that those countries “They don’t forget what happens in other parts of the world.”
Chile announced on Thursday a night curfew starting at midnight this Friday in the areas most affected by the fires in three regions of the country where a state of catastrophe was declared.
So far, the fires caused the death of at least 24 people and more than 2,000 injuriesin addition to razing some 343,000 hectares.
The wave of forest fires has completely destroyed 1,205 homes and left 5,570 people homeless, according to the official balance. (YO)
