5.5 magnitude earthquake shakes Indonesia

An earthquake in Indonesia, in the capital of the province of Papua caused the collapse of a beach cafe and left, so far, four dead.

The telluric movement occurred at 1:28 p.m. (0628 GMT) with an epicenter detected south of the capital Jayapura, at a depth of 22 km, according to the USGS seismological institute.

The Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics of Indonesia The earthquake was estimated to have a magnitude of 5.4, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

“A cafe collapsed and four people died. It fell into the sea,” Asep Khalid, director of the Jayapura disaster management agency, said in a statement.

Indonesia is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area that has more seismic activity due to the contact of tectonic plates. (YO)
