Spanish rescue troops from the Military Emergency Unit (UME) are already working in Ganzitep (Turkey) to help in rescue work in an area where “half the population is missing” as a result of the earthquake, as detailed by Defense Minister Margarita Robles.
In an interview, the minister explained that the UME troops left Spain this Monday in two Air Force and Space planes –an A400M from the Torrejón de Ardoz base and an A330 from Morón– with the aim of landing in Adana, the gate to the epicenter of the earthquake that devastated parts of Turkey and Syria.
However, upon arriving at the Adana airport “the chaos was absolute”, according to Robles, so the EMU team was diverted by plane to Antalya. Later, around 1:30 p.m., the soldiers were able to land at the Adana military base and “they are on their way to the area that has been assigned to them.”
Robles stressed that in the case of the UME, it is stationed in the town of Ganzitep, near the Syrian border, where “the mayoress told them that half the population is missing at this time.” “We will try to lend a hand in the destiny that we have been givenwhere we are working with teams from Qatar and India”, has affected.
At this point, the head of Defense has pointed out that the priority now is to “rescue people underground” that they do not know if “they are dead or alive” and give material such as coats or food. Robles recalled that both the military base where the Spanish contingent is in Turkey and the ships “are receiving people who have nowhere to stay” due to the earthquake.
