After the earthquakes registered this Monday in the northeast of Turkey and northeast of Syria there is only a seven day window to rescue to the people who have been buried under the rubblesaid today a representative of the UN Humanitarian Aid Office, the first to act in cases of disaster.
This estimate is the result of innumerable rescue operations in the world, although there can always be exceptions and let the victims endure a little longercommented the spokesman for that entity, Jens Laerke, when making a first balance of the human cost of the tragedy.
To rescue the victims, the UN has mobilized teams for disaster assessment, as well as search and rescue, made up of the best specialists in the world in these tasks, those who are traveling to Turkey. In addition, on the same Monday twelve teams sent by different countries arrived in this country and another 27 are expected to arrive between today and tomorrow.
“The big challenge right now is access by land (for these personnel and their equipment) as many roads in the region have been destroyed by earthquakes“, commented Laerke. Another difficulty is the lack of vehicles to transport the international experts, for which the local authorities are mobilizing trucks from other provinces of Turkey.
