Rescue authorities in Turkey and Syria confirmed that Monday’s earthquakes have killed 5,000 people so far. At least 3,419 people have been killed in Turkey and 1,602 in Syria.

The quake was felt early Monday morning, and had a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
It would have a depth of 10 kilometers and the epicenter is located 23 kilometers from the district of Nurdağı, southwest of Turkey, which is why it was also felt in Syria and Lebanon.
Another earthquake, measuring 7.5, rocked the country on the same day.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan described it as the country’s “biggest disaster” since 1939, when a massive earthquake struck the eastern province of Erzincan. In 1999, a quake of similar magnitude devastated Izmit and the densely populated eastern Sea of Marmara region near Istanbul, killing more than 17,000 people.
“We don’t know how high the number of casualties will be as efforts to remove rubble from various buildings in the earthquake zone continue,” Erdogan said.
