“Before it was a joke, now it’s problems”: This is the life of the Ugandan father of 102 children and grandfather of 578 grandchildren

Musa Hasahya Kesera married in 1972 when he was 17 years old and in 1973 he made his debut as a father. Today, in a village in Uganda, Africa, he is a famous man because with 12 wives he fathered 102 children.

“I had 102 children, but we lost 4 and now I have 98 children. They have given me 578 grandchildren ”, he tells the press that he comes to Bugisa (eastern Uganda) to interview him for such a large family,

In a video posted on YouTube it is said that polygamy is authorized in Uganda. Therefore, this man, in his youthful years, was able to join several women.

He sold cattle and was a butcher, which gave him notoriety and residents of nearby villages presented him with their daughters, some of whom were minors, a practice that was allowed until 1995.

What the women of Musa say

Musa lives in a deteriorated house, with tiles on the roof and around 20 huts, built with adobe, for her children or other relatives.

One of his wives narrated that she did not know that she would take others home.

I felt bad, I got angry; but over time we get used to everything

Seven of the wives stand by Musa, two abandoned him and 3 left for other towns to manage the maintenance of their children, narrates the YouTube material posted on February 2, 2023.

“We barely have enough food. We are obliged to feed our children once, or twice on good days”, explains Zabina.

Musa Hasahya Kesera’s third wife assures the AFP agency that she would never have married had she known that her husband had other women.

With my weak health and less than one hectare of land for such a large family, two of my wives have left because I couldn’t provide for them with the most essential things, such as food, education or clothing, says the father of the family, today unemployed, says AFP

The day to day in the village for the women is spent weaving mats or braiding their hair, while the men play cards in the shade of a tree, describes the French news agency.

“Irresponsible attitude”

Their wives declare that they take contraceptives. Musa does not care.

“At first it was a joke (…) but now it’s problems,” says Musa Hasahya Kesera, 60.

This Ugandan, well-known in the Bugisa village, confided to AFP: “I have already learned (the lesson) from my irresponsible attitude, from having had so many children that I cannot take care of.” (YO)
