Iran maintains the blockade of WhatsApp and Instagram

Iran will maintain access restrictions on Instagram and WhatsAppthe most popular foreign platforms in the country, blocked for months due to a protest movement, announced President Ebrahim Raisi.

“Both platforms will only be able to operate if they have a legal representative in the country to be responsible for the activities of their users,” Raisi said on television Tuesday night.

The authorities imposed drastic restrictions on the internet and social networks, mainly blocking access to Instagram and WhatsAppafter the beginning of the protests over the death of young Mahsa Amini in mid-September.

The two platforms owned by Meta, the American company of Mark Zuckerberg, “They were the cause of insecurity in the country during the recent riots,” Raisi said.. But he added: “I told the country’s officials that the internet disturbances caused the nation’s discontent.”

Instagram and WhatsApp were the most used applications since the blocking of the YouTube, Facebook, Telegram, Twitter and TikTok platforms in recent years.

Iran has been in the midst of a protest movement following the death on September 16 of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman detained by morality police for not wearing the headscarf correctly.

Authorities say hundreds of people, including members of the security forces, have been killed during the protests, and thousands more have been detained. (YO)
