Two weeks after the disappearance of a capsule with radioactive material, it was found on a road in Australia.
The silver capsule was the size of a pea and went missing between January 10 and 16, while being transported on a truck between a mine north of Newman in the Pilbara region and north-east of Perth, a distance of about 1,400 km.
The urgent search for a lost radioactive capsule in Australia that can seriously affect human health
Local media detailed that a search vehicle detected the radiation south of the mining town of Newman on the Great Northern Highway. Finally, with portable equipment, it was located on the side of the road.
“Basically, we have found the needle in the haystack,” said Darren Klemm, commissioner of Fire and Emergency Services, after seven days of searching.
The capsule, although it could not be used as a weapon, could cause radiation burns or serious illnesses in whoever handled it. Inside was Cesium-137, which is used for mining operations.
According to authorities, the capsule had been packed on January 10 and arrived in Perth on January 16, but when an inspection was carried out nine days later, the capsule was found to be missing and the indicator broken.
The capsule was owned by the Rio Tinto company that regretted the fact. (YO)
