It is presumed that the students ingested the medication as part of a challenge that has gone viral on social media”, the letter stated.

On January 25, the Mexican Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) alerted young people to the risk involved in a challenge that has gone viral on the TikTok platform.

The game, calledWhoever falls asleep last wins”, consists of consuming controlled drugs that induce sleep and trying to hold on to suspense for as long as possible.

The inappropriate consumption, without medical supervision and irresponsible of drugs with anxiolytic properties such as clonazepam, has side effects that range from drowsiness, dizziness and nausea to loss of balance, coordination problems, headache, muscle or joint pain.”, Cofepris said in a statement.

The authorities of Guanajuato, the capital of the state that bears the same name, reported that this Monday morning they received a call from a woman who asked for help because two elementary school students were intoxicated.

Upon arriving at the scene, the authorities identified 15 students, between the ages of 10 and 11, with symptoms of clonazepam poisoning, for which they were transferred to different clinics to assess their state of health.

This phenomenon has grown alarmingly in Mexico. Only in January, more than twenty cases of intoxicated young people were reported when putting into practice this challenge that went viral on TikTok.

The Mexican authorities identified in 2022 around 500 incidents of minors derived from this type of challenge.
