The Pakistani authorities raised a maximum alert to the entire country after the attack that took place this Monday in a mosque.
Around 61 people have died and another 150 were injured by an explosion inside a Peshawar Police headquarters, in the northwest of the country, where there are also intelligence agency headquarters.
In the middle of a prayer the explosion was recorded, specifically in the second row of those who were praying at that moment. for which a rescue operation has been undertaken to save those who were buried.
At least 25 dead and more than 120 injured in Pakistani mosque attack
“Many policemen are buried under the rubble,” said Peshawar Police Chief Muhammad Ijaz Khan, who estimates that 300-400 officers used to attend prayers at the mosque. “Efforts are being made to get them out safely,” he added.
With the alert call, snipers were placed to protect some buildings and access points.
“The terrorists want to strike fear into those who are tasked with defending Pakistan,” Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said in a statement.
“Those who fight against Pakistan are going to be wiped off the face of the earth,” he added.
The UN Secretary General, António Guterres, condemned the “disgusting” attack.
“The Secretary General strongly condemned the suicide bombing that took place at a mosque in Peshawar, Pakistan, earlier today,” his spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, told reporters. “It is particularly disgusting that such an attack occurred at a place of worship,” he said.
Already in March of last year there had been a suicide attack on a mosque in the same city, the group that claimed responsibility for the attack was EI-K, the local branch of the jihadist group Islamic State, leaving 64 dead.
The country in general has faced a deteriorating security situation in recent months, particularly since the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan in August 2021.
After several years of relative calm, there were again attacks by the Pakistani branch of the Taliban, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the IS-K and Baluch separatist groups.
Pakistan reproaches the Taliban for allowing these groups to use its territory to plan attacks, something the Kabul authorities deny. (YO)
