Hundreds of episodes of mutilation, dismemberment and destruction of corpses stood out amid the crisis of homicides and disappearances they face.
The civil organization Causa en Común has documented 4,527 acts of extreme violence classified as “atrocities” between January and October 2021, it revealed in a report published on Tuesday.
The citizen security association highlighted at least 700 cases of mutilation, dismemberment and destruction of corpses amid the crisis of homicides and disappearances facing the country.
“’Atrocity’ is defined as the intentional use of physical force to cause death, laceration or extreme abuse; to cause the death of a high number of people; to cause the death of vulnerable people or people of political interest, and / or to provoke terror, “the group specified in the report.
In addition to the destruction of corpses, Causa en Común listed as the most common atrocities torture (with 924 cases), the discovery of clandestine graves (520), massacres (459) and the murder of women with “extreme cruelty” (389 ).
It also listed 321 cases of calcination, 320 murders of minors, 249 lynching attempts and 154 homicides of officials and actors related to public security, among others.
These events, obtained through journalistic records, have claimed almost 6,800 victims of acts of extreme violence so far this year, the organization said.
“The atrocities that are part of this document are ‘only’ examples of a gallery of horrors, since, of the total of these types of events, only some are disseminated by the media,” added the group.
The states with the highest number of reported atrocities are Guanajuato, with at least 500; Jalisco, with 342, and Michoacán, with 258, three neighboring entities of the central-western region of the country.
The association clarified that not all violence corresponds to drug trafficking, but there are also family, community and social violence.
“Far from the mythology about organized crime that prevails in our public conversation, a good part of these atrocities are perpetrated by people who are not part of criminal organizations,” said the report.
Mexico has recorded the two most violent years in its history during the first two years of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, with 34,689 murder victims in 2019 and 34,558 in 2020.
In addition, the country has more than 94,000 missing and non-located people, according to data from the Ministry of the Interior (Segob). (I)
