The Latin American currency and stock markets registered mixed behavior yesterday, amid a slight advance in the dollar in global markets after positive data from the US economy, although fears of a possible recession continued to cloud the outlook .
According to Reuters Agency, the US economy maintained a strong pace of growth in the fourth quarter as consumers increased spending on goods, but the momentum appeared to slow considerably towards the end of the year, with interest rates higher than erode demand.
The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew at an annualized rate of 2.9% last quarter, reported the Department of Commerce in its advance estimate for the fourth quarter. The economy expanded at a rate of 3.2% in the third quarter. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast GDP growth of 2.6%.
The US currency rose about 0.3% against a basket of six major currencies that make up the dollar index, although it remained near its eight-month lows.
