At least four babies have died in a fire at the plant where the newborn unit of a children’s hospital in India was located.
The fire broke out on Monday night at the Kamala Nehru Children’s Hospital in Bhopal, in the central state of Madhya Pradesh, and affected the neonatal care unit.
Despite the firefighters and the rescue teams “immediately” moved to the hospital, “Four children could not be saved in the incident,” while other minors are being treated at the same center.
The regional minister of Medical Education, Vishwas Sarang, has conveyed his “deepest condolences to the families” and has ordered that “a high-level investigation” be opened in the face of what happened. Although, in statements to the press, he explained that it is suspected that the fire may have been caused by a short circuit.
According to the local channel ‘NDTV’, the hospital had a fire service, but at that time it was not operational. In fact, fires, landslides and other similar accidents are frequent in India, often due to the poor state of infrastructure and lack of maintenance, factors fueled by corruption and illegal practices.
In 2018 they were registered in India 13,099 fires in government buildings, schools, residences and other places, where 12,748 people died and 777 were injured. In the latest of these incidents that occurred last Saturday in the western state of Maharashtra, at least 10 people were killed in a fire at a public hospital for patients with coronavirus. Last January, in the same region, ten babies died in another hospital fire, sparking outrage in the country.
