Ukrainian hacker extorted $ 50 million from Apple

The US Department of Justice announced the arrest in Poland of the Ukrainian hacker Yaroslav Vasinsky, accused of extorting $ 50 million from Apple. This is reported by the MacRumors edition.

Representatives of the department said that Vasinsky belonged to the REvil group, which participated in network attacks on enterprises and government agencies in the United States. In April, a criminal gang attacked Apple supplier Quanta Computer and stole design schematics for a 14-inch MacBook Pro. Vasinsky and his accomplices demanded a ransom of $ 50 million from Apple.

It is clarified that REvil posted a ransom demand on its website, but after a few days the group deleted the message. Also, the Ministry of Justice is confident that Vasinsky took part in the July attack on the software manufacturer Kaseya.

Together with the hacker, his colleague Yevgeny Polyanin was taken into custody, but then released – $ 6.1 million was seized from the latter. Both suspects were charged with conspiracy to commit fraud. Vasinsky is going to be extradited to the United States, he faces up to 115 years in prison.

In July, a Ukrainian Microsoft employee, Vladimir Kvashuk, received a prison sentence. In court, it was proved that Kvashuk took advantage of a vulnerability in the company’s system and thus robbed his employer of more than ten million dollars.
