The Government of Germany expects to resolve “in the next few days” its doubts about the possible shipment of Leopard tanks to Ukraine, according to Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, who has marked as the first step the preparation of an inventory of currently available cars.
Once this inventory is done, and “if the yes is given”, the issue can be resolved in a matter of days, Pistorius said in an interview with the ZDF chain, hours before meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. Berlin promises to act “quickly”, also with regard to the training of personnel and the deployment of tanks.
However, Pistorius has clarified that the final decision rests with the office of the chancellor, Olaf Scholz, After in recent days there has been speculation about a possible division within the tripartite coalition in relation to aid that the main Ukrainian authorities have been publicly demanding for days and in all kinds of forums.
This pronouncement comes after the Polish Defense Minister, Mariusz Blaszczak, announced that the Government has submitted an application to Germany for the transfer of those tanks to Ukraine.
The minister has assured on Twitter that “the Germans have already received the request for consent for the transfer of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.” Along these lines, he has also made an appeal “to the German side so that join the coalition of countries supporting Ukraine with Leopard 2 tanks”: “This is our common cause, because it is about the security of the whole of Europe!”
