The China Meteorological Administration has issued an alert for the cold wave that is shaking the country and has advised the population to take precautions both for the drop in temperatures as a result of strong winds.
The Administration has issued a blue alert – the least severe of four levels – due to the cold wave, which will cause sharp drops in temperatures in various parts of the country until next Wednesday. temperatures are expected drop between 12 and 14 degrees degrees Celsius in some parts of northeast China, the regions south of the Yangtze River and in the south of the country, according to the center.
Some areas in the northeastern province of Jilin could see drops in more than 16 degrees, to which must be added gales, the agency added on Tuesday. In eastern Yunnan province, a popular tourist destination in the south-west of the country, temperatures will drop to 0 degrees on Wednesday.
Last year, the average temperature in that area was between 3 and 14 degrees. Likewise, the Administration warned about the impact of the cold wave on agriculture and advised the population to take precautions both due to the change in temperature and the wind.
This Saturday, the city of Mohe, the northernmost in China, registered the lowest temperature in its history, reaching negative 53 degrees celsiusreported the Administration.
This mark thus exceeds the -52.3 degrees recorded in 1969 in that same city, and also becomes the lowest temperature ever recorded in China. Mohe, located in the province of Heilongjiang and bordering Russia, is known as the “North Pole of China” because in winter its temperatures tend to fluctuate between 20 and 40 degrees below zeroand the annual average is negative 3 degrees, with up to eight months a year of ice and snow.
The city authorities took several measures to guarantee the supply of electricity, such as redoubling maintenance and controls at electrical stations, water stations or traffic safety, CCTV state television reports today. According to the head of the local weather station, the minimum temperature will rise in the coming days, but will remain below minus 40 degrees Celsius.
