UK and EU sanction Iran for suppressing protests

The fourth round of sanctions against Iran became effective this Monday, after the United Kingdom and the European Union applied new sanctions against 40 Iranian officials and organizations.

Among those sanctioned are senior officials and the Tehran morality police, commanders of the Revolutionary Guards Corps and state media.

The measure was adopted during a meeting of European foreign ministers in Brussels, as part of warnings to Iran for repressing protests taking place in their country since the fatal punishment applied by the morality police against Mahsa Aminia 22-year-old girl who was physically attacked for wearing her clothes incorrectly and died.

During the demonstrations, the Iranian authorities arrested and sentenced hundreds of people to death.

According to the British government, Iran is responsible for “a judicial system characterized by unfair trials and disproportionate punishment, including the use of the death penalty for political reasons.”

“Alireza Akbari was a tragic victim of this brutal system,” London added, referring to a British-Iranian executed on January 14 after being found guilty of spying for Britain’s intelligence services.

However, for now the EU member countries have not decided to classify the Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist group, despite calls made by Germany and the Netherlands. (YO)
