The reform proposed by the government of Emmanuel Macron to delay the retirement age from 62 to 64 years was approved, despite having been received with popular rejection.

Another part of the measure includes bringing forward to 2027 the increase in the years of contribution necessary to collect a full pension (from 42 to 43).
More than a million French protested last week against the pension reform, which has already begun its parliamentary proceedings.
“The age measures that we adopt are those that will allow us to balance the pension system in 2030”argued the Minister of Labor, Oliver Dussopt.
The decision was made largely because the number of retirees in France is increasing compared to active workers, who are the ones who pay the pensions of the former. In addition, life expectancy has also increased to 85.5 years in women and 79.4 in men.
The plenary session of the National Assembly (lower house) will begin debating the bill from February 6, before it reaches the Senate (upper house). The left-wing parties and the far-right opposition have already announced that they will vote against it.
This reform is one of the key measures that Macron, 45, promised during the campaign that led to his re-election in April. (YO)
