Body of ‘suspected Chinese Lunar New Year gunman’ found in white van after he ‘shot himself’ during intense confrontation

The “Year of the Rabbit” began tragically for the inhabitants of Monterey Park, California. On Saturday night, a man killed at least 10 people during a massacre at a nightclub in this Asian suburb of Los Angeles.usually mild-mannered, who was still in shock on Sunday.

Police in the United States appear to have identified this afternoon an Asian man suspected of killing 10 people by shooting indiscriminately in a dance room at a club in Monterey Park, near Los Angeles, where the Lunar New Year was celebrated.

According to the first investigations, the shooting was caused by hatred between a ‘wife and a husband’ and that it was a ‘personal case’ taken to horrific extremes.

A security forces tactical (SWAT) team searched a white pickup truck Sunday afternoon in Torrance that, according to police information, is potentially related to the mass shooting in Monterey Park, California.

According to the authorities, a suspect of Asian origin entered a nightclub last night and opened fire, leaving 10 dead -five men and five women- and 10 injured, some seriously. The suspect allegedly eliminated himself. Photo: — ROBYN BECK

According to coverage by various US news outlets, the individual in the van appeared to be dead, possibly from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, although authorities are awaiting confirmation.

When officers during the standoff ordered the occupant of the van to get out of the van, they allegedly heard the driver shoot himself. During many tense moments that followed, the operation for the SWAT team became getting into the van. Officers eventually made their way to the vehicle before tearing up bloody rags after an intense standoff that lasted for about three hours this Sunday afternoon.

Sheriff Robert Luna said police responded to emergency calls shortly after 10 pm Saturday (0600 GMT Sunday) and found people leaving the facility.

“Unfortunately” paramedics “declared 10 victims dead at the scene,” he said.

Five women and five men died, authorities said without giving names or ages.

At least 10 people were injured, Luna said, some seriously.

Red lanterns and banners full of ideograms remain hanging in the city of 60,000 inhabitants. But instead of residents celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year, heavily armed police cordons are seen guarding the scene of the drama.

another incident

The sheriff also described a second incident in nearby Alhambra that took place about 20 minutes later, in which an armed Asian man entered a dance studio but was tackled and disarmed. The man fled and no injuries were reported. (YO)
