Western countries were unable to make a final decision on the supply of tanks to Kyiv, primarily because of the position of Germany, said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Diario.

According to him, the discussion is too slow “moving towards a decision on the supply.” Borrell stressed that “this is a political decision that has not been taken so far mainly due to the evasiveness of Germany.” At the same time, according to him, “it is necessary to accept the risk of supplying Ukraine with the necessary weapons.”

“There was always a risk, it was because of him that they didn’t want to transfer fighters,” the politician added, adding that the EU countries had stopped discussing the supply of combat aircraft to Ukraine and were now transferring anti-aircraft guns instead.

In total, according to Borrell, the EU provided assistance to Ukraine for 50 billion euros, including humanitarian and financial.

Recall that Germany has repeatedly stated that it will not supply tanks to Ukraine alone. Chancellor Olaf Scholz explained the refusal by the fact that the FRG did not want to bring the conflict to a war between Russia and NATO. Nevertheless, a number of European countries, where Leopards are in service, expressed their readiness to transfer them to Kyiv as part of an international coalition. In particular, such statements were made by Poland and Finland. However, this requires permission from Berlin.
