Lula da Silva replaces commander of the Brazilian Army

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the president of Brazil, dismissed the commander of the Army, Julio César de Arruda, on Saturday.

Arruda had assumed the position on an interim basis on December 30, two days before the end of the government of the far-right Jair Bolsonaro, and was confirmed by the Lula administration in the first week of January.

The president’s decision comes almost two weeks after the riots caused by Bolsonaro supporters, who broke into the presidential residence on January 8.

According to the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper, Lula made that determination because Arruda “did not show willingness” to take “immediate” measures to appease his doubts about the actions of some military sectors in the coup attempt two weeks ago.

This same week, Lula announced that 40 soldiers who guarded the Planalto Palace would be removed from their posts and that an in-depth investigation of the personnel would be opened on suspicion of “internal complicity.”

The replacement will be the current military commander of the Southeast, General Tomás Miguel Ribeiro Paiva.
