(Live) Takeover of Lima: Protesters begin to gather in various squares

Hundreds of protesters have begun to gather in various squares in Lima before the protest called Toma de Lima with the aim of calling for new elections as well as the closure of Congress.

Thousands of inhabitants moved to the capital to protest and demand the resignation of Dina Boluarte, who assumed power after the departure of Pedro Castillo last December. This has caused a massive security operation to be deployed to prevent riots and confrontations.

The police deployed “11,800 troops in the streets to control riots, we have more than 120 trucks and 49 military vehicles, and also the participation of the armed forces,” said the head of the Lima Police Region, General Víctor Zanabría.

“The police are on high alert,” he added.

Lima is one of the areas that has a state of emergency in force, however, a union leader said that authorization was not required to gather.

“There is no authorization from the police, authorization is never requested for a social demonstration, it is not an obligation that they authorize us,” he assured, despite the fact that the state of emergency suspends the freedoms of assembly and movement, in addition to allowing the intervention of the army to maintain order.

Several statues and monuments in the center of the capital were wrapped in plastic sheets to protect them from damage.

The National Police, on the other hand, reinforced the perimeter of the Palace of Justice as well as Abancay Avenue.

Clashes in Arequipa

Once again, the Arequipa airport was the point of confrontation between nearly 200 protesters who had broken through the security barriers, for which reason police personnel began the operation to prevent the seizure of the air terminal.

In the same way, the Plaza de Armas was filled with protesters who requested the departure of Dina Boluarte.

On Thursday, the death of a second protester wounded by a gunshot wound to the chest when he was demonstrating in Macusani, Puno region, was reported to the AFP the Ombudsman.

On Wednesday, a woman also died of a gunshot wound in the framework of the protests in Macusani, where a mob burned down a police station and a courthouse.

These two deaths brought the total number of deaths to 44 since the crisis broke out on December 7. (YO)
