Ecuador will be the meeting point of the regional Cannabis industry

For three days, from February 9 to 11, Ecuador will be the meeting point for the most renowned specialists in the use, research and production of cannabis from the American continent together with a couple of important figures from Europe. This is because the country will host the Fourth Meeting of Expert Professionals in Phytocannabinoids (Cannamerica) for the first time.

The meeting is considered one of the most important in the American continent and is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) for 2030 in areas such as: health and well-being, quality education, industry, innovation and infrastructure. It will take place at the Universidad de las Américas, Udla Park campus, in Quito, where perspectives, medical, scientific, regulatory and professional updates will be presented regarding previous editions held in Peru, Chile and Argentina.

More than 150 cannabis products are sold on the market and imports have grown 1,052% since 2020

Mayu Ecuador, a local company dedicated to the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes and dedicated to its research since 2010, main organizer of the event and part of the Cannamerica Group, will be in charge of receiving about 50 international exhibitors who are experts in clinical use. , research and industry.

This, in a context in which the cannabis industry, especially non-psychoactive, has had significant growth in Ecuador after its regulation since 2019, highlighted the Cannamerica group, an international organization that brings together related associations and sensitive to the issue of use and regulated access to cannabis for medicinal use.

According to the latest figures from the Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade, Investment and Fisheries, until October 2022 there were more than 150 products with hemp and non-psychoactive cannabis on the market with health notification, in accordance with the provisions of the public database of the National Agency for Health Regulation, Control and Surveillance (Arcsa).

Of the more than 150 products on the market, those of a cosmetic type are the most representative with 56%, followed by products for medicinal use with 25% and finally food products with 19%.

Until last December, in the National Registry of Hemp Licensees of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) there were 169 licensees, of which 107 have a license 3 for the cultivation of non-psychoactive cannabis or hemp and 25 with a license 5 for the processing of non-psychoactive cannabis or hemp and production of derivatives of non-psychoactive cannabis or hemp.

Meanwhile, among the experts invited to the meeting will be the Czech scientist Lumír Hanuš, whose research at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, together with Raphael Mechoulam and William Devane, led them to discover the first endocannabinoid in 1992, Anandamide, which in Sanskrit means state. of serenity, spiritual peace and happiness, and that organisms produce internally and naturally.

The Spanish biologist Cristina Sánchez, tenured professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain, and who has been carrying out studies since the 1990s on cannabis applications, especially in cancer and THC in mice, will also arrive in the country. From the United States will be Mara Gordon and the doctors Ethan Russo and Jordan Tishler, as well as the British neuropsychopharmacologist David Nutt.

Additionally, the meeting will have academic endorsement and the presence of important figures from the Ecuadorian government, such as the Ministry of Production, Ministry of Tourism and Arcsa, which have supported the development and study of the cannabis plant in the country. (YO)
