UN condemns attempted assassination of Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al Kazemi

The attack on Al Kazemi comes at a time of tension in Iraq following violent clashes between protesters and police.

The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, condemned this Sunday the assassination attempt of the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mustafa al Kazemi, who escaped unharmed from an attack with an explosive drone launched today against his residence in Baghdad.

In a statement sent by his spokesman, Guterres called for the perpetrators of the crime to be held accountable, while he called on the Iraqi population to “exercise maximum restraint, and reject all violence and any attempt to destabilize” the country.

The UN chief “urges all political actors to respect the constitutional order and resolve differences through peaceful and inclusive dialogue,” adds the note, in which the organization supports “the people and Government of Iraq in his search for a better future ”.

The attack against Al Kazemi comes at a time of tension in Iraq after the violent clashes between protesters and police during a demonstration last Friday in Baghdad, in front of the Green Zone itself, against the results of the legislative elections of October 10. .

The clashes left two people dead and more than a hundred wounded, many of them policemen, which provoked an angry condemnation from the leaders of the pro-Iranian militias in Iraq, who in the last elections lost almost two-thirds of their seats and reject the results. . (I)
