Union of workers in Peru demands the resignation of Dina Boluarte

The General Confederation of Workers of Peru (CGTP) called a national strike this Thursday, January 19, to demand the immediate resignation of the president, Dina Boluarte, and call for early elections.

The unions and social organizations that have mobilized towards Lima will meet tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. (local time), to gather at Plaza 2 de Mayo.

The CGTP also calls for the creation of a Constituent Assembly, something that Boluarte denies is part of its role.

“It does not correspond to Dina Boluarte, it does not correspond to the Executive (…) They are deceiving (the protesters) by saying that it is Dina Boluarte who has to resolve the issue of the Constituent Assembly. That is not true,” the president declared to the media.

Boluarte also assured that the demands are “a pretext to continue blocking roads and continue breaking the institutionality of the country”.

The protests in Peru broke out last December, when the then president, Pedro Castillo, tried to dissolve Congress and was arrested hours later, in the middle of his escape from the presidential residence. (YO)
