Spiegel: German chess players will be deprived of subsidies from the state due to matches with the Russians
German chess players who play in tournaments with the participation of Russians will be deprived of subsidies from the state. This is reported by Spiegel with reference to the directive of the German Ministry of the Interior.
According to the source, chess players will not receive funding for trips to Russia or Belarus. In addition, athletes will not receive assistance to participate in tournaments to which the Russians are admitted. It is noted that these rules are binding until further notice.
The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has allowed Russian and Belarusian chess players to compete under a neutral flag until January 1, 2024. It is noted that after the expiration of this period, athletes will be returned the right to compete under the flag of their country if no other decision is made before that.
In August, FIDE President Russian Arkady Dvorkovich reacted to the proposal of the Danish grandmaster Peter Heine Nielsen to expel Russia from the organization. Dvorkovich stated that he prefers to think about the good of the entire chess world.
