Vietnamese president resigns after corruption scandal

The Vietnamese President Nguyen Xuan Phucresigned on Tuesday, state media announced, after several days of rumors of an imminent removal from office as part of an anti-corruption purge.

Nguyen Xuan Phuc “he resigned from the positions he held, left his job and retired”indicated the state agency VNA. Such a sudden resignation is not common in Vietnam, where the communist regime tends to carefully prepare political changes, with the aim of giving an appearance of stability.

The resignation follows the dismissal of two deputy prime ministers, in January, within the framework of an anti-corruption offensive that also led to the arrest of dozens of senior officials.

Phuc, 69, becomes the first president to leave office before the end of his termwhich began just two years ago, after serving for five years as prime minister with great popularity for his management of the first year of COVID-19 pandemic in Vietnam.

According to the agency, Phuc “assumed his political responsibilities as a leader after several senior officials, including two deputy prime ministers and three ministers, committed violations and misdemeanors that had serious consequences.”

Phuc is a key leader of the country’s and state’s Communist Party, born into a traditionally “revolutionary” family, assigned by the Party Central Committee and the Politburo to many important Party and state posts. Nguyen Xuan Phuc has been the president of Vietnam since 2021. Before that, he had been prime minister, since 2016. (YO)
