Former president Jair Bolsonaro was included in the investigations being carried out for the raid on official buildings on January 8 in Brasilia.
A Supreme Court judge determined that after the Prosecutor’s request, Bolsonaro be included to investigate whether there was instigation and intellectual authorship of the violent acts that caused the vandalization of the Supreme Court, Congress and the Presidency.
The Prosecutor’s Office requested the inclusion due to a video on social networks that the former president had uploaded two days after the attacks where he questioned the electoral result. The entity considers that “it carried out public incitement to the practice of a crime” by uploading the video.
In a note sent to the AFP On Friday, the defense of Bolsonaro, who is in the United States, denied any participation in the acts of vandalism for which there were more than 1,800 detainees.
“He (Bolsonaro) never had any relationship or participation in these movements,” says the note, which accused “infiltrators” of the riots.
The interrogation request of Bolsonaro, who is in the United States, will be analyzed “in a timely manner,” Moraes clarified.
This Saturday it was announced that Anderson Torres, ex-Minister of Justice of the ultra-right, had been arrested in Brasilia on suspicion of “intentional collusion” with the assailants at the heart of democracy in the capital.
Torres was acting as the capital’s security secretary on Sunday, when thousands of people stormed the headquarters of the presidential palace, Congress and the supreme court, a week after the rise to power of the leftist Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva. He was removed from office accordingly.
“He was arrested upon disembarking at the Brasilia airport and sent to custody, where he will remain at the disposal of justice,” reported the Federal Police, which carried out a hermetic operation.
“The investigations continue in secret,” added the institution.
Bolsonaro’s close associate, who denies the accusations and is detained in a Military Police battalion in the capital, appeared at a first hearing this Saturday and is expected to offer testimony next week, according to the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper. (YO)
