The president of the COP28 and head of the Emirati national oil company called on Saturday to “focus” on reducing CO2 emissions without attacking “progress”, that is, the Energetic industry.
Sultan Al Jaber, chairman of ADNOC (Abu Dhabi National Oil Company), the United Arab Emirates’ national oil company, was named on Thursday as chairman of this year’s UN climate conference in the wealthy Gulf state, which drew harsh criticism from environmental advocates.
“We are at a historic turning point. Growth with less CO2 emissions is the future”, declared Sultan Al.
“We are working with the energy industry to accelerate decarbonization by reducing methane and developing hydrogen,” he added at an energy forum held in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the Emirates.

“Let’s keep focusing on curbing emissions, not progress,” added.
Sultan Al Jaber, who is also his country’s special envoy for climate change, tried to calm criticism after his appointment as president of COP28, which will be held in November and December in Dubai, the country’s most influential emirate.
“The United Arab Emirates approaches this task with humility, a strong sense of responsibility and a great sense of urgency,” he said, describing the fight against climate change as “central” to his country, which is likely to be hit hardest, as will the entire hot, hydrocarbon-rich Gulf region. Jaber is also Minister of Industry of his country.
