They arrest the former minister of Jair Bolsonaro in Brasilia

Anderson Torres, the former Minister of Jair Bolsonaro was arrested this Saturday in Brasilia (Brazil) in connection with the violent attack on the capital on January 8, for which the far-right ex-president is also under the magnifying glass of the prosecution, local media reported.

Torres’ arrest occurred after the director general of the Federal Police, Andrei Rodrigues, pointed out “the various omissions, in theory intentional, practiced by those responsible for public security in the Federal District and that contributed to the practice of acts terrorists” of January 8.

Bolsonaro’s former Minister of Justice, served as Secretary of Security of the capital the day that thousands of supporters of the far-right leader devastated the headquarters of public power.

Torres, removed from office as a result of the assault, was on vacation in the United States, from where he announced through social networks that he was going to return to Brazil to appear before the courts and defend his innocence.

It landed this Saturday morning, according to local media, a day after the current Justice Minister, Flavio Dino, said that they would activate international cooperation mechanisms if he did not return voluntarily.

The operation at the airport was carried out discreetly, and the Federal Police, in charge of the arrest, has not yet responded to AFP’s requests for information.

On Sunday, thousands of followers of the far-right Bolsonaro invaded the offices of the Presidency, the National Congress and the Supreme Court, in an attack against Brazilian democracy.

Alexandre de Moraes, Supreme Court judge, ordered his arrest for the alleged “intentional collusion” with the violent acts of Bolsonaro’s followers.

Moraes authorized Friday night, at the request of the Attorney General’s Office, to include Bolsonaro in the investigations that seek to clarify who the instigators and masterminds of the attack were.

The former president, in the United States, has said he had no connection with the violent demonstrations and, through his lawyer, defended his innocence.

Torres, a close ally of Bolsonaro, will also have to give explanations in relation to a draft presidential decree, without signature but with Bolsonaro’s name, which could alter the result of the 2022 elections in which the leftist Lula da Silva was elected. Dino reported.
