Fighting between ELN and FARC dissidents leave at least 10 dead in Colombia

In the last few hours there have been clashes between the National Liberation Army (ELN) and FARC dissidents in a department near the border between Colombia and Venezuela.

According to official sources, at least ten people were killed in the fighting between Monday and Tuesday. The residents of the village of El Paisaje had reported heavy fighting.

A report by RCN Radio indicated that the inhabitants had indicated that the person in charge of the finances of the dissidents had died.

This occurs while the ELN guerrillas did not agree to a bilateral ceasefire with the Government. Four other armed groups did.

This Wednesday, the ELN assured that they will advance with the peace negotiations when the crisis with the government of Gustavo Petro is resolved.

“First we have to solve the crisis that was generated by the President’s unilateral declarations, referring to a supposed ‘Bilateral Ceasefire’ agreement with the ELN, which does not exist. There is a discussion route that will have to be resumed once it is resolved,” said the top rebel commander, Antonio García, in an interview broadcast on the social networks of the National Liberation Army (ELN).

The Guevarista insurgency and the Colombian government will resume in Mexico the negotiations that began in Caracas, on the tentative date of January 23.

“We are going to talk about the situation created by the government, for which we have no responsibility, it was not created by us, rather we are victims,” said the rebel chief.

The half-century conflict in Colombia leaves 9 million victims, most of them displaced.

Experts warn about the difficulty of peace processes with the ELN, which is not considered comparable to the other organizations up in arms and whose federated structure blurs its unity of command. (YO)
