New York state will be able to continue to ban gun carrying in vulnerable places, like schools and public spaces, after the Supreme Court rejected a petition to freeze the bans based on location.

The Supreme Court, dominated by a conservative majority, upheld in June the constitutional right to “keep and bear arms” and struck down a restrictive rule on carrying firearms in New York.
However, the magistrates recognized that there are exceptions in which weapons could be banned. Since then, the New York State Legislature has sought to restrict its carrying in bars, libraries, schools, government buildings, hospitals and vulnerable and highly trafficked places, such as Times Square.

The request to freeze the law came from groups and individuals in favor of carrying weapons, who consider that the prohibition violates human rights. They convinced a lower-ranking state court to suspend it until the challenges filed were resolved.
The state of New York appealed to a federal appeals court, where a judge overturned the suspension. (YO)
