Germany to lift restrictions against donating blood from gay people

In Germanygay people who have had sex with a new partner or with more than one partner in the last four months are prohibited from donating blood due to a strict rule dating back to the 1980s.

At the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, the health authorities took this measure, which was previously more restrictive, to avoid contagion through blood. Despite the fact that the disease already has more advanced treatments and there is a lower rate of contagion, the restriction is still in place forty years later.

Scientists prove that the combination of vaccines is key against AIDS

However, this measure is nearing its end. German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach announced that the rules restricting blood donation will be reformed.

“Whether or not someone can become a donor is a question of whether they have risky behavior, not their sexual orientation,” he told the RND press group.

The reform to the law on transfusions that will be presented by the minister, according to the German press, stipulates that “sexual orientation and gender identity should not be exclusion criteria.”

The deadline to modify the law is until April 1, but the College of Physicians will have an additional four months to develop a new, less discriminatory regulation. (YO)
