The Ombudsman’s Office Peru announced the death of at least 13 people in the midst of the protests that take place against the government of Dina Boluarteespecially in the department of Puno.

A premature baby was being transported in an ambulance from Yunguyo, but halfway there he was prevented from going to the Puno regional hospital.

“The blockade of the road in the context of the political conflict delayed his transit to the hospital and decreased his chances of recovery,” the Ombudsman said.

Ismael Muñoz, regional director of Health, specified that the minor needed a specialist as well as an incubator as he had respiratory failure for which he had been referred since in Yunguyo he did not find what he needed.

In the middle of the journey, which should have lasted an hour and a half, they found mounds of earth and when trying to remove them, medical personnel were attacked by protesters, reported Peruvian media.

Puno, the Peruvian Aymara region bordering Bolivia, has become the epicenter of the protests with an indefinite strike since January 4.

From there, a march is organized to the Peruvian capital that should arrive on January 12, according to various calls from social groups, which mainly bring together peasants.

In the city of Juliaca, in Puno, demonstrators once again tried to storm the airport of that city, being repressed by the police. On Saturday there was a similar attempt.

The Ombudsman specified that due to the clashes in the vicinity of the air terminal, nine people died. One of them was reportedly injured by a pellet to the head, for which reason they called on the forces of order to make legal, necessary and proportional use of force.

However, hours later the figure rose to 12. “We have confirmed 12 deaths today in Puno during clashes with law enforcement in the vicinity of the Juliaca airport,” he told the AFP a source from the Ombudsman’s Office.

The protests against the government of Dina Boluarte resumed on January 4, after a brief lull due to the end of the year holidays.

The protesters maintained this Monday roadblocks in six of the 24 departments of the country, including tourist areas such as Puno, on the shores of Lake Titicaca; Cusco, Arequipa, Madre de Dios, Tacna and Apurimac. (YO)
