Summit of EU-Latin America leaders will be held in July

The summit of leaders of the European Union (EU) and of Latin America and the Caribbean scheduled in Brussels during the Spanish European presidency will be held next July, as announced on Monday by the Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares.

Albares advanced the date of the celebration of that meeting in his speech before the VII Conference of Ambassadors that is held over two days in Madrid, inaugurated today by the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez.

The EU-Latin America and the Caribbean summit will be held within the framework of the EU presidency that Spain will hold from July 1 to December 31.

During the presidency of the EU “Spain will act under the principle of unity between all partners so that all European citizens benefit from policies designed for the great social majorities and for the most disadvantaged in order to leave no one behind ”, Albares pointed out.

The reform of economic governance, the adoption by qualified majorities of decisions on foreign policy or defense, or the strengthening of strategic autonomy will be some of Spain’s priorities in this period.

Also that the EU leads large sectors such as green hydrogen or supercomputing.

And in terms of foreign policy there will be a clear commitment to strengthen relations between the EU and Latin America.

In this context, Albares stressed that one of the milestones of the presidency will be the summit of leaders of both regions to be held in Brussels.

The last call was in 2015, eight years ago, and for this reason Spain trusts that it will serve so that the European Union “never again” turns its back on the Latin American region.

The meeting between the two regions will be one of the topics to be discussed at the Ibero-American summit that will take place in March in the Dominican Republic.
