The US stops mentioning Guaidó in exceptions to its sanctions against Venezuela

The Government of the United States eliminated this Monday any mention of the opposition Juan Guaidó and his allies in the exceptions that it contemplates in the sanctions imposed on Venezuela, after the anti-Chavistas approved eliminating the “interim government”.

The Treasury Department of USA today issued a general license that replaces the one published in January 2021 to eliminate any allusion to Guaidó, as was the case in the license from two years ago.

The new license indicates that US citizens are authorized to have transactions, prohibited by the sanctions against Venezuela, with the National Assembly (under opposition control) or any entity designated by that body to exercise its mandate.

This authorization extends to persons elected by the Venezuelan National Assembly, including its members and staff.

In the 2021 license, the United States contemplated exceptions in transactions with “the current interim president of Venezuela, Juan Gerardo Guaidó Marquez, and any official, designee or representative appointed or designated by Guaidó to act on behalf of the Government of Venezuela”, as well as with ambassadors and representatives of the opposition in US territory and in third countries.

The White House has assured that it will continue to coordinate with Guaidó and “other like-minded democratic leaders” of Venezuela, although he has avoided clarifying whether he continues to recognize him as interim president of the South American country.

The spokesman for the National Security Council of the United States Government, John Kirby, recently reiterated in a telephone press conference that the United States continues to recognize the authority of the 2015 National Assembly (NA, Parliament), whose term expired in January 2021. and does not recognize the 2021 Legislative, controlled by the ruling party.

Most of these former parliamentarians from 2015 withdrew at the end of the year Guaidó of the presidency of the parallel Legislative, which will now be occupied by Dinorah Figuera, exiled in Spain.
