New Year’s Eve attack in Ukraine left hundreds of Russian soldiers dead

A shelling by Ukrainian forces in Makeyevkaa region in the east of the country, left at least 400 Russian soldiers dead on New Year’s Eve, the Ukrainian Army reported.

This figure contradicts the one announced by the Russian Ministry of Defense, although it coincides in being the highest number of casualties in a single attack since the beginning of the Russian invasion.

According to this entity, only 63 Russian soldiers died in the attack. He also claimed that the Ukrainians used a HIMARS missile system, a weapon delivered by the United States to Ukraine, which allows long-range attacks.

According to the spokesman for the Ministry of Defense, Igor Konashenkov, four missiles hit “a temporary deployment center” of the Russian army, in the town occupied by Moscow.

The figures collected by Ukraine contradict those announced by Russia. The Department of Strategic Communications of the Ukrainian Army reported on Telegram a balance of more than 400 dead and 300 wounded.

Although no definitive death toll was recorded, up to ten military vehicles of all types were destroyed.

A source from the local separatist authorities explained to the Russian agency TASS that this bombardment occurred because many soldiers used their mobile phones, which allowed them to be geolocated by the Ukrainians.

The announcement of these casualties caused a shock in Russia and also generated criticism against the military commanders, who have accumulated several humiliating defeats on the Ukrainian front in recent months.

In September, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported 5,937 deaths in Russian ranks in several months of fighting. (YO)
