WHO: in 2022 the pandemic can be controlled if concrete actions are taken

The world is in a position to control pandemic in 2022, but this will depend on the individual and collective decisions made in our societies, said the head of the anti-COVID technical unit of the World Health Organization (WHO), Maria Van Kerkhove.

“What happens in 2022 depends on us, the possibility of taking control over transmission is there: we can eliminate deaths, hospitalizations, but we have to make conscious collective and individual decisions for this,” said the American expert on the wheel. press.

Van Kerkhove launched this appeal in the week in which the number of deaths from the pandemic on the planet exceeded five million, “a figure that is actually much higher” since many cases have not been accounted for by health networks, Van Kerkhove acknowledged.

“The trajectory of the pandemic is, always has been, in our hands,” insisted Van Kerkhove, who was alarmed by the progress of the COVID-19 in the European continent, where infections have increased by 50% in the last four weeks.

The pandemic “has caused a lot of pain, anger and frustration, but we need these emotions to be transformed into actions to protect ourselves and others,” the expert stressed.

The director general of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, added in the same press conference that it is worrying that COVID-19 continues to cause more than 50,000 weekly deaths globally or that in the last week deaths have increased by 10% in fifty countries.

“This should not be happening, we have the tools to prevent transmission and save lives,” said Tedros.
