Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced on Saturday during a press conference in Warsaw that it is planned to return to work on the law on the Supreme Court this week. The head of the government expressed hope that the legislative process would be carried out quickly.
The prime minister wants quick work on the act unblocking KPO
At the same time, he stressed that the project must be approved by the head of state. – The president will make his own autonomous decision. The act, which was written on the basis of the compromise worked out by Minister Szynkowski vel Sęk, gives very strong grounds to believe that it may end the dispute, which is unnecessary today, explained the Prime Minister.
The head of the government also explained that due to the potential threat from the eastern direction, a compromise with the EU was needed.
The Prime Minister also referred to the meeting with the main opponent of changes in the law. – We met several times with Minister Zbigniew Ziobro and deputies from his party and they were good, substantive talks consisting of a part devoted to the functioning of the judiciary and a part related to the financial market and economic issues – he said.
– We promised ourselves that we would discuss within our group. I can say that the unity of the United Right is a lasting value. I do not think that this unity has been violated by the work on the law on the Supreme Court
– added.
President Andrzej Duda also commented on the KPO act. – When this draft is developed, processed in the Sejm, then it will go to the President of the Republic of Poland – as always in the legislative process – and then I will analyze its decisions, primarily guided by these criteria of compliance with the constitution of these solutions. Of course, it is very important to me that there is a compromise with Brussels, said the president last week.
Deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: A compromise that allows us to move forward
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Paweł Jabłoński also commented on the agreement. The guest of the First Program of Polish Radio explained that the Sejm is to deal with the draft amendment to the law on the Supreme Court from Wednesday. The adoption of the amendment is intended to unlock funds for the implementation of the National Reconstruction Plan.
The deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the Minister for EU Affairs Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki had been conducting intensive talks with the European Commission on this matter in recent weeks. – We have reached a compromise, which is certainly not ideal, but it is never the case that both parties are one hundred percent satisfied. However, it is a compromise that allows us to move forward, to end this unnecessary dispute – added Paweł Jabłoński.
On December 13 last year, PiS deputies submitted to the Sejm a draft amendment to the law on the Supreme Court, which, according to the authors, is to complete a key “milestone” for the European Commission to unlock funds from the KPO. The assumptions of the project were negotiated during the talks of the Minister of EU Affairs, Szymon Szynkowski aka Sęk, in Brussels.
