Russian analyst arrested for lying to FBI in case of spying on Donald Trump

Russian analyst Igor Danchenko was arrested this Thursday in the United States.

Russian analyst Igor Danchenko was arrested in the US on Thursday. Accused of lying to the FBI in a case about spying on members of former President Donald Trump’s electoral team (2017-2021) for their alleged ties to Russia in the 2016 election campaign.

The Justice Department explained in a statement that Dachenko, a Virginia resident, He was indicted on five counts of having made “false claims to the FBI.” about the sources he used to pass information to a British company that produced a report on alleged relations between the Trump campaign and Moscow.

Danchenko provided data to former MI6 (British intelligence services abroad) agent Christopher Steele, whose company drafted a document in which it was ensured that Russia had contact with the Trump campaign team.

This report, which is based on rumors and with allegations that were never proven, became one of the most controversial parts of the investigation that the FBI carried out in its day into the alleged ties between Trump and Moscow.

According to the Department of Justice, between March and November 2017, Danchenko made statements to FBI agents about information that he allegedly received from an anonymous person, who he thought was a private person, when in fact the Russian knew it was false.

The data allegedly provided by that anonymous individual included claims such as that there were communications between members of the Trump campaign and Russian officials, and that the Kremlin could help the Republican win in the elections.

Danchenko’s arrest occurs within the framework of the investigation carried out by the prosecutor John Durham, ordered by Trump in 2019 about the alleged spying on his campaign during the 2016 elections, which originated the so-called “Russian plot.”

In Durham’s two years of probing into the FBI’s role, he has come up with no major findings. (I)
