The Peruvian government is deploying military and police officers given the possibility that, as of January 4, the demonstrations demanding the resignation of President Dina Boluarte, the early elections and the calling of a constituent assembly.
In a press conference with the Association of the Foreign Press in Peru (APEP), the Minister of Defense of Peru, Jorge Chávez, assured that the Armed Forces are deployed in support of the National Police under an emergency decree issued by the Boluarte government.
“The Armed Forces have already deployed the means and the personnel by virtue of the information (with which the Government has)”, Chávez said.

In this sense, he explained that “they have located the areas in which demonstrations could possibly take place on January 4 that can degenerate into violent actions in order to protect critical assets, strategic infrastructure, road network and, above all, the highest priority is to protect the population”, he added.
For his part, the Minister of the Interior, Víctor Rojas, explained that the Government has “information that, possibly, as of January 4, 2023, we will once again have social conflicts, particularly in the southern zone” of Peru.
In this sense, he commented that this Thursday he will travel to the southern regions of Arequipa, Cusco and Puno, “to corroborate the information (…) and to prepare the police services.”
Rojas explained that the purpose is not “to go with the intention of a repressive action”, but to “go establishing the services with the desire to protect the property and free movement of people who have to continue mobilizing to carry out their different activities”. He also assured that there “clear provisions” on respect for human rights. (YO)
